Background Information:
The Festival of the Arts, celebrating its 42nd year in 2005, is
a major regional arts event presenting the creative endeavors of
recognized and emerging artists from all disciplines of the art
world. The Festival, a sub division of the non-profit Lakewood
Center for the Arts, is committed to arts education, performance and
exhibiting the arts of the region.
The Festival enjoys an outstanding reputation for bringing special
exhibits of quality and diversity that are accessible to everyone. The
event has grown to include an open art show of more than 1,000
regional artists, a special exhibit of regional or national
importance, a juried craft faire featuring more than 110 Northwest
artists, and a special juried exhibit of Northwest artists. Now
attracting up to 22-25,000 people, this three day celebration also
showcases a performing art series, music in the park, and a children's
art and performance venue. The 2005 Co-Chairs are Lois Suwol and Nancy LaBonte.
History:
The Festival was originally started by the Lake Oswego Chamber of
Commerce and moved under the umbrella of the Lakewood Center for the
Arts in 1985 as an annual activity of the Center. It is sustained by
valuable partnerships with the City of Lake Oswego, the Chamber of
Commerce, the School District, the Regional Arts and Culture Council,
the Clackamas County Tourism Council, service clubs, small and large
businesses, the "Friends of the Festival," plus more than
400 volunteers who work throughout the year and the weekend to make
the Festival the success it is.
The 2005 Festival Welcomes
Art Beneath the Bark - A
Celebration of Woodturning
Celebrating its 42nd year, the Lake Oswego
Festival of the Arts will be presenting as its cornerstone exhibit,
"Art Beneath the Bark - A Celebration of Woodturning,"
June 24, 25 and 26, 2005. This special premier exhibit will feature an
invitational exhibit featuring regional and national woodturning
artists and a special juried exhibit featuring Northwest woodturners. It is anticipated that approximately 180 woodturning
pieces will be on display in a show that will be the largest show of
its kind ever staged in the state of Oregon. The special exhibit will
also feature the works of guest artists Dan Kvitka (former editor of
"The American Woodturner") and William Moore (sculpture, drawing and
design teacher at Pacific Northwest College of Art). During the
Festival weekend these artists will be available to talk about their
work. In addition, the Festival will host special artist workshops and
lectures highlighting the ancient art of woodturning.
Information on workshops and other special events is available on this web site. In addition the Festival features a fine art craft faire, a
juried art show, an open art show, special exhibits, lectures and
performing arts during the weekend.
Festival dates:
June 24, 25, & 26, 2005 at Lakewood Center for the
Arts and George Rogers Park.
