Oregon's Iron Era, 1865 -
1928
In The words of Oregon's Industrial Pioneers
Visit
Oswego Heritage House during the Festival of the Arts. We will be open Friday,
June 23rd from 10:00-4:00 and following Saturday and Sunday (12:00-4:00). The
exhibit highlights the early years of the iron industry starting with the
furnace in George Rogers Park and the ending with the second furnace at the
current Foothills Park. Illustrated panels show the workings of a blast furnace,
maps of the iron mines and charcoal making. They tell the iron story from the
point of view of those who lived during those pioneering years (the Chinese, the
iron workers and the miners). There are examples of the materials that went into
making the iron (lime, charcoal, iron ore), the slag (glass like impurities that
remained), the pig iron bars which were the end product, common iron implements
and nails, and the cast iron which was made to decorate buildings here in
Portland and San Francisco. Additional panels show the furnace as it looks today
and engineer drawings of the restoration process we hope will become a reality
for the furnace at George Rogers Park. It is a fascinating journey through time
when Oswego was a "company town".
