Nine is the story of a celebrated film director Guido Contini and his attempts to come up with a plot for his next film as he is pursued by the hordes of women in his life (past and present), all clamoring to be loved by him and him alone. Flashbacks reveal the substance of his life which will become the material for his next film: a musical version of the Casanova story.
Nine was created and written by Maury Yeston as a class-project in Lehman Engel's BMI Music Theatre Workshop in 1973. It was later developed with a book by Mario Fratti, and then again with a book by Arthur Kopit, music and lyrics by Maury Yeston. The story is based also on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film 8½. Nine opened on Broadway in 1982 directed by Tommy Tune and choreographed by Thommie Walsh.
Nine was the winner of five 1982 Tony Awards including Best Musical and again as Best Revival of a Musical in 2003. It was adapted into a major motion picture directed by Rob Marshall in 2009.
