Classes for Youth

New! Beginning Ballet I

Wednesdays & Thursdays, Jan. 11 – March 2 8 weeks
4 – 5 PM Ages 5 – 7
Instructor: Kasha Watts       $130 x 1 class a week/$250 x 2 classes a week

This class is a transition from the creative movement aspect of Pre-Ballet to a more formal ballet class in which the fundamentals of ballet and barre work are inroduced. Focus is on posture, muscle strength, technique and musicality in a supportive and encouraging environment. One year of Pre-Ballet experience recommended.

New! Beginning Ballet II

Wednesdays & Thursdays, Jan. 11 – March 2 8 weeks
5 – 6 PM Ages 7 – 9
Instructor: Kasha Watts       $130 x 1 class a week/$250 x 2 classes a week

This is a formal ballet class where students participate in stretching, barre work and center floor work. Students will further develop posture, muscle strength, technique, musicality and self-discipline in a supportive and encouraging environment. One to two years ballet experience recommended.

This is a fun, creative introduction to basic ballet movement. Emphasis is on coordination, rhythm, music and mime using props, rhymes, stories and imagination.

This class is an extension of Creative Movement with a focus on basic ballet skills, terminology, rhythm and coordination. Skills will be practiced and developed through creative movement, music and use of props in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Kids Create - Winter Wonderland

Saturdays, Jan. 14 – March 4 8 weeks
2 – 5 PM Ages 4 – 7
Instructor: Liz Hayden        $150

Children will step into the world of creating, designing and making their own show from pure imagination. Through games, play, art, music and dance students will create an exciting show. Remember to bring a snack and get ready to have a wonderful time. Performance on the last day of class for family, friends and invited guests. Video and nonflash photos strictly encouraged.  Special note: As of 1/2/17, CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Unfortunately the instructor is unable to teach this term. Look for her to return in the spring term.

Grimm To Glee TV

Students learning TV and film practices.

Have fun while practicing on-camera acting skills. Become a star acting in front of the camera and create scenes like the NBC television series Grimm, based on the Grimm Brothers Fairy Tales, with lots of villains, heroines and monsters. Throw in some comedy and have a blast while learning television production. Parents are invited to observe the last class in action! Class limited to 8 students. Returning students accepted.

On-Camera Acting

Act in front of the camera, create and perform scenes, practice improvisation, presentation and audition skills using commercial, film and TV scripts (both comedy and drama). Instant video feedback helps students improve their talent, develop confidence and poise. Parents are invited to attend the last class in action! Instructor Sandra Peabody is an Emmy-award winning writer/producer/director and manages young talent for voice-over, film and television work in the Northwest and Los Angeles. Limited enrollment. LTC Studio Pro is a training program for dedicated young actors who want to be part of a performance cast and have fun, while gaining more confidence, presentation and life skills. The curriculum focuses on teaching reality acting techniques applicable for theater, film and television. All students will star in video performances, including a show with a live television audience, a LTC-TV webisode created by students, and scenes from Network shows with the final viewing on the Lakewood Theatre’s Headlee Mainstage Big Screen. Using television and film as a media, students also learn many aspects besides TV/Film acting including filming, directing, producing and more.  
The LTC Studio Pro program is open to all students who have taken an acting class, have previous performance experience in theater, television or film, or with teacher approval. All material is different each term. Returning students are welcomed.

Sing, Sing, Sing

Tuesdays, Jan. 10 – March 14 10 weeks

Ever wish you could sell a song like the pros do? Leona Mitchell, who comes to us via a long career as a Broadway and National Touring Company singer and actress, teaches singers of all experience how to control the performance, take the stage, and make the song shine. This is a class for everyone who wants to ace the audition or wow the crowd with emphasis on salesmanship and solo performance. Mitchell, who has shared the stage with such luminaries as Ethel Merman and Tony Roberts, works with each student on an individual basis to bring out the very best you have to offer. Whether it’s a ballad or an up tune, this class will teach you breath control, how to vocalize for the strongest voice and how to come across the footlights as the professional you were meant to be. Ages 18 and older. Class limited to 10 students.

A very special class that explores the life and work of the author and playwright, Agatha Christie, and includes a night at the theatre! That’s right: included in the cost of the class is attendance to Lakewood’s production of Murder on the Nile which will be held during one of the classes. You will also be accompanied by your instructor, the director of the play, Nancy McDonald. Whether you’re a writer, an actor, a lover of Christie or murder mysteries in general, you are invited to join us on this scintillating journey up the Nile, where you never know what you might find. You will be historians, archaeologists, thespians and, of course, detectives as we uncover the acting clues necessary to bring to life (and death) a murder on the Nile!

How To Tell Your Story

We are the stories of our lives, but how we tell that story requires our own unique recipe. Start with a story circle, add improv, a pinch of standup, a smidge of story theatre and a bit of drama and you have a true and rewarding concoction. Whether it’s storytelling, presentation, theatre, comedy or public speaking, learn to tell your story using the art of the actor in a non-threatening, creative environment.

Shakespeare Audition Workshop

Come and work out your Shakespeare audition material with the support, feedback and expertise of an instructor who founded the Shakespeare Stage Company in New York. Nancy McDonald has decades of experience acting, directing and coaching local actors in their auditions for area theatres. Get ready for the upcoming Unified Shakespeare Auditions and get a head start on auditions for the summer Shakespeare performances happening all around town. Students are welcome to attend one or both classes.

Rising Artist Workshop (RAW)

Instructor: Andrew Paul Woodworth $400

A select of group of students will work with Sony recording artist, Andrew Paul Woodworth, on vocal skills and performance techniques. The workshop will culminate in a well-produced show where students will sing and perform with a live band onstage. Shows like The Voice, American Idol and Glee have replaced standard musical theater fare as the inspiration for many young singers and performers. Woodworth will focus on proper breathing techniques, increased vocal range, vocal power and connecting emotionally to the music students perform. Most importantly, they will have FUN. Actress Alicia Lagano and Coach Sandra Peabody take a different approach to prepare an actor for more success and confidence in the audition room and on set. Alicia teaches many lessons using her scripts, personal experiences with directors’ requests, physical actions and on-set challenges, along with individual and on-camera feedback.  In each lesson, actors apply what’s given, perform and are guided to understand the process of making it real and moment-to-moment. Alicia’s perspective has helped many actors with their careers and prepares them for many situations. With over 20 years in the business, Alicia has 42 credits including film, TV series lead regulars, recurring and guest star roles, auditioning for over 100 casting directors, screen testing and on set direction. Sandra is a teacher, acting coach and talent manager who develops talent and splits her time between Los Angeles and Portland.

This workshop covers:
