Dear World

Book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman
Based on Jean Giraudoux's play The Madwoman of Chaillot
as adapted by Maurice Valency
New version by David Thompson

The Story: Three Countesses deviously scheme to stop businessmen from drilling for oil in the Parisian neighborhood of Chaillot. The forces of idealism, love and poetry win over those of greed, materialism and science.

Based on Jean Giraudoux's play The Madwoman of Chaillot, the musical centers around the Countess Aurelia (Debbie Hunter), living in the basement of a Parisian bistro in 1945, driven mad by a lost lover and bemoaning her past. When oil is discovered under the streets of the city, she and fellow oddball dreamer friends Gabriella (Amy Jo Halliday) and Constance (Cherie Price) must band together to stop businessmen from destroying her home, and indeed all of Paris. This surreal musical fable of Good versus Evil (ahead of its time in 1969), with its themes of environmental degradation, corporate greed, evil and human folly, is a resonant and cautionary tale in a post-Enron world. Others in the cast include Cassie Kohl, Matthew Brown, Ron Harman and Jeremy Southard.

Ticket prices are $20 for all seats. Contact the Lakewood Theatre Box Office at (503) 635-3901 or Click here to Purchase Single Tickets securely online.

History of the Play:
The original Broadway production opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on February 6, 1969, and closed on May 31, 1969 after 132 performances and 45 previews. Directed and choreographed by Joe Layton, Scenic Design was by Oliver Smith, Costume Design was by Freddy Wittop and Lighting Design was by Jean Rosenthal. The show featured Angela Lansbury, Jane Connell, Carmen Mathews, Milo O'Shea, Kurt Peterson, William Larsen, and Pamela Hall. Miss Lansbury won a Tony as Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Countess Aurelia (The Madwoman of Chaillot).

Originally conceived as a chamber musical, Dear World fell victim to a massive production that effectively overwhelmed the simplicity of the original tale. The musical had a notably troubled preview period that included multiple changes to the script and score. Two directors were hired and let go before the show's final director, Joe Layton was hired. He also replaced the choreographer Donald Saddler. Reviews were not favorable. The show was always viewed as having a glorious score and a troubled book and production.

After the Broadway closing, Herman, Lawrence, and Lee rewrote the show, putting back, as they described, "the intimacy that had been undermined on Broadway." A revised version was produced at Goodspeed Musicals in November–December 2000, with Sally Ann Howes as Aurelia. This version had a revised book by David Thompson plus three songs written after the musical closed. Lakewood's production is of the revised version.
