Ty Boice remains a darling of the Portland stage, and for good reason. He puts on the gloves and doesn’t hit below the belt in Golden Boy. With his natural shock of blond hair he’s a sensitive, but driven, hero, with a keen awareness of (Joe) Bonaparte’s mixed-up inner world beneath his strong-man facade.… Lakewood’s Golden Boy gives us the smoke and mirrors of a good play.
— Christa Morletti McIntyre, Oregon Arts Watch
Lakewood Theatre has done it again. It has revived another classic, this time a drama, and breathed new life into it as we watch Joe (Ty Boice) walk the tightrope between his old life and the new… Golden Boy’s message is a sobering one fraught with jealousy, betrayals, and the power we all have to choose right or not-so-right in all its incarnations. The casting is excellent.
— Judy Nedry
Boice is particularly powerful in portraying this image of a person caught up in a web not of his understanding, coming from two opposing backgrounds and having opposing dreams which, not unrealistically, must come to a head. I recommend this play. If you do choose to see it, please tell them Dennis sent you.

The story: Joe (Ty Boice) is a temperamental young Italian with strange notions according to his father, Mr. Bonaparte (Gary Powell). At heart a musician with a real talent for the violin, he longs to be “top man” in some other field. By chance, he stumbles into the prizefighting racket and with his new-found manager, Tom Moody (Jason Maniccia), he becomes surprisingly good. In each fight he becomes more adept but he holds back, fearing that he will ruin his hands for the violin. Moody tries to convince him that fame and money will be more important than music and he enlists his own girlfriend, Lorna (Tabitha Trosen), to persuade Joe to fight harder.
