Two By Two

Music by Richard Rodgers
Lyrics by Martin Charnin and Book by Peter Stone
Based on the play The Flowering Peach by Clifford Odets

The Story: Two By Two, with music by Richard Rodgers, is a parody of the story of Noah’s Ark and centers around preparations for the Great Flood and its aftermath. On his 600th birthday, Noah (Ron Daum) receives a message from God, warning him about the impending flood. He is directed to save two of each animal and to build an ark for them. Noah's wife Esther (Beth Noelle) and family have their doubts and even make fun of him as he plans to build the ark, but join in when the animals start to appear en masse.

It seems that the building of the ark was only the first of Noah’s many daunting challenges in a journey that wasn’t always smooth sailing. Both inspirational and comical, Noah tries to convince people of the upcoming flood while struggling to keep his chaotic family together. When the land has dried, man and beast go forth to prosper in the New World.

Two By Two also features Benjamin Tissell as Japeth, Noah’s youngest son; Mike Dederian as Shem, Noah’s oldest son; Caitlin Upshaw as Leah, Shem’s wife; Mike Borgstrom as Ham, Noah’s middle son; Kerie Darner as Rachel, Ham’s wife; and Stephanie Willing as Goldie, a Gentile.

"The story dealt with Noah and the flood, and though written in 1954, covered such contemporary themes as the generation gap and ecology," Rodgers wrote. "There was even a parallel between the flood and the atom bomb."
